Loneliness isn't just an emotional issue - it affects health. (SOURCE: CDC) The CDC says loneliness and social isolation can increase the risk of serious mental and physical health conditions and identifies social connection as an important component of overall health and well-being.
1 in 4 adults don't have the social and emotional support they need. (SOURCE: CDC) The CDC reports that approximately 25% of U.S. adults say they don't have adequate social and emotional support.
Americans themselves recognize loneliness as a major problem. (SOURCE: PEW) In a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, 60% of adults under 50 said loneliness is a major problem in the country. Interestingly, this was higher than the 46% of adults 65 and older who said the same.

According to the Foundation for Art & Healing’s UnLonely Project, more than 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. report feeling serious loneliness, and the numbers are even higher among young people, caregivers, and underserved communities. The consequences go far beyond feelings—chronic loneliness is associated with:
A 29% increase in risk of heart disease
A 32% increase in risk of stroke
A 50% greater risk of developing dementia in older adults
And, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, the same health impact as smoking 15 cigarettes a day
